Tips for Walking and Biking
Commuting by Bike
- Plan your bike route by first walking, biking or driving it
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Maintain and inspect your bike before every trip and carry a spare tire or tube
- Dress suitably at night and inclement weather
- Carry drinking water and a mobile phone
- Use bicycle-mounted storage for briefcases, handbags, etc.
- Wear a correctly fitted bicycle helmet
- Use a front and rear bicycle light at night
- Ride predictably and visibly by using bike signals
- Know and follow all traffic laws
- Explore the option of an electric bike or electric motor kit for your bike if traveling over hilly terrain, long distances, or if you aren’t in shape
- Encourage your spouse, friends and coworkers to join you
Commuting on Foot
- Plan your route, and have an alternative plan for days you are unable walk
- Time your first few walks until you can predict how long it will take you to get to work and give yourself plenty of extra time at first
- Wear appropriate shoes, socks and clothing, and be prepared for inclement and changing weather. You may need to carry your work attire.
- Protect your head and skin from the sun, wind and cold with hats and sunscreen
- Carry a water bottle for hydration
- Use a backpack or messenger bag that distributes weight appropriately; carry no more than 5 pounds
- Always take safety precautions
- Cross with the lights
- Watch for moving vehicles
- Walk against the oncoming traffic where there are no sidewalks
- When walking in traffic areas with particularly bad visibility (such as after dark or in the rain) carry a bicycle strobe light
